Last weekend, eight of my Memoir & Mindfulness students and I attended the Magic of Memoir conference, sponsored by the National Association of Memoir Writers http://namw.org and SheWrites Press http://shewritespress.com. The conference was held in Oakland, CA. Great to hang out with about 100 memoir writers from all corners, to hear their stories of trials and triumphs, pitch to agents, and learn about the many facets of memoir writing. Also great to celebrate the publication of the book, Magic of Memoir, an anthology of essays about memoir writing and publishing, produced by NAMW and She Writes press. I’m pleased to have my essay, “The Shower and the Fish” included in that book, which also includes essays from such senior gurus of the memoir movement as Elizabeth Gilbert, Mary Karr and Dani Shapir, and Mark Matousek. If you’re a memoir writer or aspiring memoir writer, I encourage you to join NAMW. Also, if you’ve never attended a writers’ conference, jump in. Google writers’ conferences and pick one that suits your interest, geography and budget.
